OUR TRAINING APPROACH

In 2013 Microsoft Canada carried out a study on consumers’ attention capacities, showing that the average human attention span was dramatically dropping: from 12 seconds in 2000 to 8 second in 2015, with the prospect to be further reduced in the following years. The results of this research were quite impressive, especially since it was compared to gold fishes’ attention span, which appeared to be of 9 seconds. Everyone was concerned: were humans regressing to be less focused than a fish?

Despite the reasons why this study came into the limelight, it also showed how the use of attention was changing in the new digital world: it appeared to be more intensive, more efficient and able to extract more information more quickly, even processing a large number of things at once. Why is that? Supposedly, it depends on the dopamine level in our brain, the driver for pleasure and fulfillment related to gratifying activities, which people nowadays are used to get from interaction on Social Media.

What does this mean for training systems design?

Since the attention span is related to dopamine, it will get lower when studying something not interesting or engaging. That is exactly why Computer Based Training and e-learning methods like Quiddis, taking advantage of multimedia elements and interactivity, can be very useful to increase the attention span and enhance the storage of information in the long-term memory.
